The original track was built in by the Black Widows car club. They cut through the ridge of Lassiter Mountainleaving deep embankments on either side of the dragway in lieu of guardrails. The owner of the track was Tony Lee.
More than 35 years after a local drag racing champion parked his race car, his lifelong friend pulled it out of storage and restored it to its original splendor. Danny Cummins' dirt-stained helmet dangles on a hook in the race car he once drove. Cummins, a Mobile drag strip racer in the s and s, was known in racing circles as "Dirty Dan" for his aggressive driving style and fierce competitiveness on the track.

Today, after nearly 50 years, he continues to operate the strip today and folks from all over the state come to race, holler and have a good time! The place is great fun for the whole family — because as you can see, it is run by family! When it makes an appearance, the crowds go wild!
The end of a new beginning is near, but not as near as had been hoped. The reopening of the shuttered Lassiter Mountain Dragway in Mt. Olive has been pushed back to June 5 because of delays in paving the return road, erecting fencing, and work on parking areas.
