As of Augustat least 21 states and over local governments had adopted sex offender residency restriction laws and ordinances, respectively, according to the California Research Bureau in an August report entitled The Impact of Residency Restrictions on Sex Offenders and Correctional Management Practices: A Literature Review.
Louisville has just under 1, registered sex offenders listed that have a specified address, according to city-data. The ratio of number of residents in the city to the number of sex offenders is to 1, among the lowest compared to many of its neighbors. The site created a map of their addresses using data obtained from the Kentucky State Police sex offender registry, as well as data from other states.
A recent change in the law will have some individuals convicted of sex crimes on the move come July 1 — a move that stands to cause a backlash in some communities. The new laws change how close sex offenders can live in proximity to schools, day-care centers and publicly owned parks and playground. Previously, offenders were prohibited from living within 1, feet from these areas. However the distance is being calculated differently now, which could change the off-limits areas for those affected by the law.
